Open Enrollment for Kindergarten Registration:
Belen Consolidated Schools will hold kindergarten registration at all elementary schools beginning January 23 through August, 2012. Please bring the following items when you come to register:
- Original birth certificate
- Shot Records
- Social Security number
- Proof of residency
Registration will begin from 8:30 – 3:00, from January 23rd through May 21st, and from 10:00 a.m. at each site during the summer.
Enrollment will continue through the summer as staff is available at each site.

According to the NM Compulsory School Act, Belen Consolidated Schools is proactively seeking strategies to address the issue of chronic absenteeism. The goal is to keep students in an educational setting. Beginning January 3, 2012 student absences will be addressed individually by the school site and by the district's Student Support Programs Office. School Schedule
8:30 AM - 2:55 PM
Students may arrive at school at 8:30 AM. There is no recess before school. Breakfast will be served in the classroom. Students who arrive after 8:40 AM are tardy and must be signed in at the office by an adult.
Demographic Information
Dennis Chavez Elementary School currently serves children in preschool through sixth grade. The enrollment is a diverse combination of 375 students with a population that includes Hispanic, Anglo, African American and Asian ethnicities.
The staff is comprised of 18 regular education, 1 bilingual and 5 special education teachers. In addition, there are 2 speech therapists, 1 occupational therapist, 1 physical therapaist, a counselor and a nurse. Also part of the Dennis Chavez Elementary school team are our principal, school secretary, lunch cashier/office assistant, 1 library technician, 6 educational assistants, 4 custodians and 5 cooks.

History
Dennis Chavez Elementary School is named after the late Senator Dennis Chavez, who was born and spent his early years in the community of Los Chavez. Los Chavez is located approximately three miles north of Belen. Its residents are commonly referred to as the "machetes," a combination of old Hispanic families and a large group of newcomers to the area. Los Chavez dates back to the earliest times of New Mexico history. It is a very pleasant and progressive community. Los Chavez continues to experience very rapid population growth.
